| Cassiem was born on 4 September 1951 in Andhra Pradesh, India. His father was a shopowner. His family were members of the Mahatma Gandhi Passive Resistance Movement.
He was 5 years of age when he moved to South Africa with his parents. They lived in Clairwood, Durban. Cassiem attended the Convent School at Oakford Priory in Verulam until Standard five, and Westcliff High School to matric.
He enjoyed playing soccer and cricket throughout those years.
Cassiem attended the ML Sultan Technical College for three years where he studied Business Management. Over the years he has worked in various administrative, training, stock control, and managerial positions in the construction, furniture, food and beverage industries. Cassiem has assisted different organisations as a voluntary worker, including the General Workers Union, Agriwasa and Helderberg Community Services, organising members, assisting in shopsteward education and in farmworker anti-eviction negotiations.
Cassiem worked during the struggle in the 1970's with groups like the Azanian People's Movement in an attempt to help dismantle Apartheid. He has also done other political work such as organising meetings and gatherings in preparation for general elections.
Cassiem's work for the SABP involves party promotion, fund-raising and member-base development, as well as specifically assisting the Winelands District in business and worker-rights promotion.
Cassiem is also one of the SABP's Candidate Applicants for Parliament.
